Deep Fried Pork Wontons Recipe

Introduction
These crispy wontons may be served as Chinese snacks or to go with Asian noodles. Drop a small piece of bread into the fryer; if it turns brown within 45 seconds, the oil is hot enough for frying.

Serving size: 4
Preparation time: 30 minutes

Ingredients
1 onion, peel then chop roughly
2 garlic cloves, peel then crush
1 green chili, deseed then chop
1 inch piece fresh root ginger, peel then chop roughly
1 lb lean pork, grind
4 tbsp freshly chopped cilantro
1 tsp Chinese five spice powder
Dash of salt and freshly ground black pepper
20 wanton wrappers
1 egg, lightly beaten
Vegetable oil for deep frying
Chili sauce, to serve

Method of preparation
Place onion, garlic, chili and ginger in a food processor and blend until very finely chopped.
Add pork, cilantro and Chinese five spice powder.
Season to taste with salt and pepper, then blend again briefly to mix.
Divide the mixture into 20 equal portions.
With floured hands, shape each into a walnut-sized ball.

Brush edges of a wonton wrapper with beaten egg.
Place a pork ball in the center, bring the corners to the center and pinch together to seal.
Repeat with the remaining pork balls and wrappers.

Pour oil into a fryer, bring to moderate heat.
Deep-fry the wontons in batches for 4 minutes or until golden and crisp.
Drain on absorbent kitchen paper.

Method of serving
Served warm with some chili sauce for dipping.
