The multi-culture of the cosmopolitan Southeast Asia has its spectrum of culinary proffering appetizers, snacks and desserts rich in aroma, taste, and color, each of which carrying its own or mixed origins. A direct reflection of its geographical location within the tropical zone, it is logical to find majority of Asian cooking containing coconut, banana, pandanus (screwpine), roots like sweet potato, tapioca, also other parts of these plants or their by-products (coconut milk, banana leave, tapioca flour, etc.).

It is not a common practice to serve desserts after meals in Southeast Asia; most of the snacks were earlier made for and during festive celebrations or as offerings in religious rituals (e.g. the Taoist). However, they have over the years evolved into its range of hit not only among the locals of other religions and races, but also among tourists and foreigners.
