The US/Imperial customary system of units of measurement which is at
times regarded as foot-pound-second, after the base units of length,
mass and time, is the main and most popular system of measurement used
in the United States while the modern metric system is an international
decimalized measurement system.
The International System of Units (or "SI", abbreviated from "Système
International d'Unités" in French) has been the standard metric system
recognized worldwide since the 1960s; currently, the SI is the official
system of measurement for all nations except for Myanmar, Liberia, and
the United States. Metric units are simply a standard set of prefixes in
powers of ten used to derive larger and smaller units from the base
units.
Types of measurement commonly used in culinary are as follows:
Liquid measures - Measuring the volume of liquid ingredients
Solid measures - Measuring the weight of non-liquid or solid
ingredients
Linear measures - Measuring the length of ingredients in a straight or
slightly curvy line
Temperature measures - Measuring the temperature of oven, other methods of cooking,
or ingredients
